يتم التعامل بالعملات في سوق العملات الفوريكس على أساس أزواج من العملات مثل يورو/دولار (EUR/USD) .
ويكون التعامل فيه بالبيع والشراء , على أساس شراء فرد من هذا الزوج وبيع الآخر مقابله .
وقد اتفقت البنوك العالمية على ترتيب رموز العملات في جميع الأزواج حتى يكون هناك توحد في المعاملات فيما بينها
فالعملة التي يوضع رمزها أولاً (من اليسار) في الصيغة تسمى العملة الأساس Base currency والعملة التي يوضع رمزها ثانياً (يمين) تسمى عملة السعر, فالسعر هو المبلغ المطلوب دفعة من العملة الثانية للحصول على وحدة واحدة من العملة الأساس.

فعندما نقول : 1.5000 = GBP/USD
فرمز الجنيه الإسترليني وضع أولاً في الصيغة فالعملة الأساس في هذه الصيغة هي الجنيه (لأن رمزها أولا ) ومعنى ذالك أن السعر الموضوع في الصيغة هو المبلغ المطلوب دفعة من العملة الثانية (وهي الدولار) للحصول على جنيه إسترليني واحد (وحدة واحدة من العملة الأساس) .
أي أننا هنا مطالبون بدفع 1.5 دولار للحصول على جنيه إسترليني واحد
